Luc Frieden: « May 8th is a symbol of hope for a better future »

« Gratitude, solidarity and hope – we came together today so as not to lose sight of these three aspects, » emphasized Prime Minister Luc Frieden (CSV) on Thursday afternoon at the memorial service for the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. The ceremony took place in a symbolic place: in the Neimënster Abbey. Olivier Worré, deputy head of the state service for the memory of World War II, recalled that 3,500 people were detained here during the war.

The surrender of Germany ended « five years of grief and fear » and made room for « tears of happiness and relief », emphasized the prime minister in his speech. One should not forget that « Luxembourg and Allied soldiers fought to live in peace and freedom ». Peace reminded that people did not survive the horrors of the Second World War without cohesion.

May 8th is a symbol of hope for a better future, not only for Luxembourg, but also for Europe. This Europe is based on values ​​and cohesion, emphasized the head of government. Accordingly, the European project was not for nothing after the Second World War.

In her speech, SadbH recalled that « our region has been living in peace for 80 years, but that is not the case everywhere, for example in Ukraine or the Middle East ». The 15-year-old Laetitia pointed out the risk of sects and how they split society. « Sentences such as Maga, Trump Train or Ultra Maga are slogans and battle calls, but over time they become an inso -language. If you don’t know what they mean, you are outside, » said the student.
