Long-awaited lawsuit murder Ikon journalists postponed at last minute

The lawsuit on the murder of four Dutch journalists from the Ikon broadcaster in El Salvador has been postponed until 3 June. Gert Kuiper, the brother of one of the journalists murdered in 1982, reports this to the ANP news agency. The case would actually take place on Wednesday in the Middle American country. According to Kuiper, the lawsuit has been postponed because the lawyer of one of the defendants had to undergo a medical intervention.

Kuiper is in El Salvador to attend the lawsuit. His statement and those of other relatives would be read on Wednesday during the hearing. He informed the ANP that he is « upset and disappointed. »

In the case, former defense minister of El Salvador, José Guillermo García, and two high military officers were to stand for the murder of the four Dutch journalists.

In 1982, Koos Koster, Hans ter Laag, Joop Willemsen and Jan Kuiper traveled to the town of Chalaatenango, a place in guerrilla area in the El Salvador torn by Civil War. The four reason just before they reached the place in an ambush from the government army and were shot.

According to Salvadoran media, the directly responsible for the ambush, the army leader and the commander of the unity concerned no longer live. One of the suspects who must stand now, former colonel Mario Adalberto Reyes Mena, would have given the order for the massacre.
