LO is political – and that is precisely why we get a breakthrough

In the news picture, we sometimes see examples of members who opt out of LO because they disagree that the organization provides election campaign support to parties on the left.

Some people find it wrong that a trade union takes a clear political stand – and wants a union that appears politically neutral.

LO has never been party -politically neutral, and it is a conscious choice. LO’s goal is and has always been to improve workers’ conditions. In order to get a breakthrough for it, LO must also be present where the decisions are made – in politics. It is no coincidence that LO supports parties that stand for workers’ rights, safe jobs, a strong tripartite collaboration and a serious working life.

Therefore, it is also natural that the Fellesforbundet – as part of LO – is consciously investing in getting more professional candidates into politics. This means that ordinary members and union representatives on the floor, people with the shoes on, will fit in the municipal councils and in the Storting. They bring the experiences of working life into the decision -making processes – and ensure that politics is shaped by those who know the reality. It is real grassroots, and it is a strength for democracy.

Some also point to the cost of being organized. It is understandable, especially in a time of higher living costs. But the membership fee gives far more back: collective bargaining rights, legal assistance, support in conflicts, good insurance schemes – and not least: Political impact that benefits the entire working life.
