LNB Excursion Exhibition Right to Library Under its Authors / Day

An exhibition that reveals the cycle of events 500 for the Latvian book The culmination of the year is at the same time an imaginative, intellectually reflective and political exhibition that everyone who loves books, but more, for those who do not yet love. Its format merges the boundaries between exhibitions of contemporary art and historical themes. The center of the exhibition is the Riga City Library (1524) – the first public library in Riga, which came from five centuries ago during the collection of sanctuary, and most of which died in World War II. At the exhibition, the story of the Riga City Library uses an example to invite you to think and discuss changes in society and thinking today. It encourages us to think about library and reading as cornerstones of a democratic society.
The exhibition curators and the authors of the text are Maija Treile and Paul Daija. Its design was created by one of the most important contemporary Latvian contemporary artists Krišs Salmanis.
The exhibition features books from the Riga City Library and other materials from the collection of the National Library of Latvia. Different materials have been deposited by: University of Latvia Library, Latvian National Museum of Art, Museum of History of Riga, Museum of History and Navigation, Latvian National Archives of Latvia, Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Riga Dome Church and Artis Ērglis. Many of the exhibits for the general public are for the first time.

The exhibition is open until February 28, 2026 during the LNB working hours. It will be complemented by different format events as well as a pedagogical program for students (April 2025).
