Little can be done if lava flows to houses
Contractors are not expected to take any action on defense gardens at Grindavík at this time.
If lava flows to houses, little could be done, but fortunately the power of the eruption decreases.
This is stated by Arnar Smári Þorvarðarson, a construction engineer at Verkís, in a conversation with mbl.is.
« They (the defense gardens) have kept as such completely, but it opens the ground through the gardens, » he says, referring to the crack which lies under the defense yard east of the greenhouse ORF which can be seen in the accompanying photographs.
Might help with firefighting
The power of the eruption appears to have significantly diminished and a small lava has emerged from the crack that extends within the defenses.
People had wondered if something could be done if a lava device was to slip into houses in Grindavík, but he says the result was that little could be done other than help with firefighting.
There are now about 13 people working for response if something has to be done in connection with the defense gardens.
No work on the defense gardens
Arnar says that so far nothing has to be done because of the eruption and adds that there was really no work on the defense gardens throughout March.
« We are watching this and looking at whether something needs to come to a response that we do not seem to have to become, » says Arnar.
There is one large gap in the defense gardens at Svartsengi so that Grindavík road is open. The lava does not flow there and therefore it has not had to be closed, but Arnar says that there is still a close watch on the state of affairs.
