Lithuania will be judged over the right / day of spying on Belarus

One of the accused was in the Lithuanian National Guard – the Riflemen Union – and became its active member.

According to information provided by the Prosecutor General's Office in May 2022, both a man and a woman who was not married went to Minsk, where he agreed to contact contacts and further cooperation with Belarusian military structures.

Investigators point out that they have collected enough evidence to believe that from this meeting to their detention in November 2023, the man and the woman carried out the tasks of the Belarusian military intelligence service – the main intelligence authorities.

They have collected and handed over the information of interest to Belarusian military bodies in exchange for money and other rewards.

The Belarusian military intelligence service has been interested in information on military equipment and weapons located in Lithuania.

It has also been interested in the infrastructure and protection of strategic objects, the activities of the Lithuanian Riflemen Union and the content of the teaching organized. The couple is also suspected of collecting intelligence on Belarusian opposition activities in Lithuania and Lithuanian citizens who could potentially recreate them.

The Lithuanian Military Intelligence Service, the Second Investigation Department of the Ministry of Defense, announced that the Belarusian military intelligence service has also tried to obtain more details of preparations for the NATO 2023 Vilnius Summit and the security measures planned to be taken during this event.

Although the information the accused had collected and handed over to the Belarusian military intelligence service was not secret, it is useful for the foreign armed forces in preparing plans of military aggression as well as other activities against Lithuania.

Both defendants are in custody and are facing up to 15 years in prison.
