Lisbon gardens free on the weekend of May
Several Lisbon gardens will be open, for free, on weekends from May 3 to 25, to mark the 14th edition of the Open Gardens Festival. The goal is to “promote connection with nature”.
“The Open Jardins Festival emerges as a strategy and response to the desire to promote a strong and positive connection with nature, combining sustainability with the urban context,” reads the description of this event, which has been held annually in Lisbon since 2017.
In a statement, the organization states that the 2025 edition « invites you to imagine a future where the city and nature converge in a place of respect and balance. » The festival makes known new spaces such as the Garden of the Museum of Contemporary Art Armando Martins, the Gardens of Bombarda (former Miguel Bombarda Hospital) and the Penha Caracol Garden (Arroios).
“We present activities and gardens that call us to reflect on the future that we want to cultivate together. Giving emphasis on action, we propose a meeting between people and nature through collective gardening activities and practical workshops, open to all, centered on direct contact with the land and plants,” he says.
To mark the beginning and closure of the festival will be held “moments of citizen science, being the visitors invited to identify species of plants, insects and other organisms”.
In different gardens will be present elements of groups and collectives such as Green Association, Batoto Yetu, Biodiversity4all, Future Dais and Tagis, among others.
The event is coorganized by the Lisbon City Council and in last year’s edition had over 28,000 appearances.
