About eight years after the fatal bomb attack on journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, two men were sentenced to lifelong imprisonment in Malta for helping murder. The court in the capital Valletta announced the sentence after the jury found the two guilty last week. Already several convictions
According to the investigation, the assassination attempt was committed by three men. Two brothers were sentenced to 40 years each in 2022 for murder. Another accomplice had already been sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2021 after letting it confessed and revealing details of the crime. The recently convicted men provided the bomb, which contained around 500 grams of gelatin explosives and could be ignited by cell phone. The contract killers placed the explosive device under the driver’s seat from Caruana Galizia’s car and let it go away remotely.
The blogger family, who was present in the courtroom on Tuesday, expressed hope that the judgments were a step towards a safer world for journalists.
