Letter to the editor. Western leaders are not allowed to deceive about Trump
In the winter of 2022, several of the western world's leading politicians in shuttle traffic went to Moscow to speak understanding with Vladimir Putin. It didn't end well. Incorrectly, they imagined that it would be possible to persuade the dictator not to attack Ukraine.
Now they are hoping that another authoritarian leader, Donald Trump, will support an EU-initiated peace proposal that can pause and preferably stop the crazy war. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer sees an American support as necessary for the proposal to have any prospects to succeed. Our Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) still trusts the United States as a faithful ally (P1 Morning 3/3).
What the Western leaders do not want to realize is that Trump has already chosen the side in the conflict and that the election fell on the aggressor Putin and not on the assaulted party. They deceive about Trump's real intentions, perhaps because they are so painful to take in.
Much speaks for that he and Putin have already agreed on how the war will end on Russia's terms, and that together they intend to put President Zelenskyj before the completed fact. It was probably the idea that was behind Trump's frivolous election promise to end the war in 24 hours. So viewed, his unprecedented closure of the Ukrainian, during the visit to the White House, becomes completely consistent.
The Ukrainians and their representatives have now suffered two brutal assaults, one military of Russia and one verbal by the United States. EU leaders are right to try to agree on a peace plan and a sharp increase in their defense budgets.
But the initiative will fail if they do not have a realistic picture of the US administration's plans as well as Trump's sympathies and antipatians. His admiration for Putin knows no bounds, while at the same time he detests Zelenskyj and the EU and preferably wants to pull the United States out of NATO.
