Letter to the editor. The law of daily rest has removed my personal freedom

To Sweden’s EU members regarding The EU Act on « Dagnition » And how it collides with the Act on Support and Service to Disabled (LSS):

According to LSS, everyone with a disability should live a dignified life and as independent life as possible and be able to do things that « healthy » people can as travel, shop, move away from home and study.

But since I live in an LSS accommodation, the EU Act negatively affects me. If I’m going to travel somewhere, I can’t get a companion with me. Especially trips that require overnight stay.

In December Should I travel to Gothenburg to go to a concert. But as it starts in the evening and goes on for a while, I need to sleep over. Here, the EU crashes with LSS, because according to the EU, staff in healthcare can only work within a certain period of time. An overnight stay would then exceed the maximum working hours.

Before the law was introduced, I had tremendous freedom. I could, at least twice a year, make longer excursions outside my county and sleep over in a hotel. That freedom has taken away from me. Surely the EU does not mean that people with disabilities should « be in cage »? It feels like it.

My parents are alive and still have the energy to help me. But soon that opportunity is not left.

This law affects All disabled. Our world is already limited. The opportunities to fulfill our dreams are more difficult than for many others.

The EU shrinks our world even more. We become even more isolated. Mental illness is a major problem and now we feel worse.

Staff working within LSS are also dissatisfied with the law. They believe that it counteracts their flexibility and ability to gild people’s everyday lives. I hope you can influence so that the law changes, so that it becomes more flexible to meet the needs within LSS.
