Letter to the editor. Sharpen the requirements for weapons license

There is both relaxation and naivety when the police authority issues weapons licenses. The requirements therefore need to be tightened on the following points:

1. No one without a completely secure identity should be granted a permit to own weapons or conduct arms trade. Persons with unclear identity from countries outside the EU are granted a weapons license after three years in Sweden. I think this is absurd. How many perpetrators, murderers or war criminals have weapons legally with the police approval?

2. The weapons law is clear that fully automatic guns are not allowed. They are prohibited, but despite this, the police authority has granted more than 300 licenses for fully automatic guns. Ballproof guns in pocket format that can be fitted with 30-shot magazines. The Police Authority and Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) have not mentioned a word about redemption of these guns. The prohibited guns should be redeemed, as favorable government decisions cannot normally be revoked. Police arms officers must sharpen themselves and not grant licenses on weapons that you do not know what it is.

3. People who cannot speak understandable Swedish and do not understand Swedish should only be able to be granted a weapons license for one year at a time. When the person concerned can show a certificate of language skills, the time limit for the weapons license must be removed.

The above suggestion hardly requires more resources for the police. Resources could be released by abolishing the harassment -like measures that are now being taken against the legal and caring shooters and hunters in the ambition to reduce the amount of legal weapons.

The police’s strategy for 30 years is to make it untrue for hunters and sports shooters in the belief that some then end with hunting or shooting. The police thus in practice oppose sporting success with shooting both in Sweden and in the international arena. Shooting is a branch where Sweden has gained very good reputation and great success with lots of Olympic and World Cup medals.

As far as I know, there is no political decision that gives the police this assignment. However, for decades, the police authority has made a decision with personal thinking as a basis in violation of the constitutional provision that government decisions must have a legal basis. National Police Chief Petra Lundh should clear in her own legal rot.

Different people Within the Police Authority, different decisions often lack legal basis. It is offensive that this may continue and it undermines confidence in our judicial system and, by extension, our democracy.

The proposed stricter above are concrete and important unlike, for example – – As after the mass shooting in Örebro – Prohibit a weapon type due to the appearance. The government should act vigorously and gladly give the police an extension because they ignore taking a trusting relationship with legal gun owners. It is the only group in society that we know is caring, since according to the Police Authority they are checked once a day by interconnecting various registers against the weapons owner register.

The serial killer Mangs in Malmö got stuck through a tip from the shooting club he was a member of. It is a good example of the importance of a good relationship with shooters and hunters. This tradition should the police try to recreate, even if it looks dark for that opportunity.
