Letter to the editor. Shameful that the government does not act vigorously to get media free
It is deeply embarrassing – yes, to say the most shame – that the Swedish government does not vigorously protest against Turkey’s arrest by the journalist Joakim Medin. The fact that a Swedish citizen risks several years in prison solely for practicing his profession as a journalist should trigger an immediate and powerful response. Instead, the government shines with its absence.
This is not the first time the Turkish regime is humiliated Sweden. Last time it was about our NATO membership-today it is about freedom of the press and human rights. Once again, we are silently incurred by President Erdogan’s authoritarian rule.
It’s high time That Sweden shows that we stand up for democracy and free media. The government should immediately call home Sweden’s ambassador to Turkey as a clear mark. At the same time, we must mobilize the EU to joint condemnation of Turkey’s actions. The arrest of Joakim Medin is not just an attack on an individual – it is an attack on freedom of the press throughout Europe.
Sweden can no longer turn a blind eye. It is time for the government to show the backbone and defend the values we say we stand for. Turkey’s overtramp must not be normalized. Act – before more people are silenced.
