Letter to the editor. Set about Swedish exports to countries other than the United States
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly described his negotiating technique, which is about opening with a horrible bid, which will take the breath out of the opponent, and then back down and give room for negotiations.
The opponent ends up in a psychological disadvantage and often makes concessions. So this time also happened, when Trump went out with completely insane tariffs, which would knock out a large part of the world trade, and then postponed the introduction. The intention is, of course, that the opponent of pure fear should make great concessions.
So what is there to negotiate? For the EU, we have previously had comparable trade barriers to the United States, whose deficit in the trade balance is mainly due to the fact that the country’s companies, especially in the automotive industry, are not sufficiently competitive.
Every remission In negotiations, Trump interprets as a sign of weakness and raises the efforts. The only thing that can make him back down is strong counterpart.
The EU should therefore not negotiate with Trump, but put in powerful countermeasures in the form of customs and other barriers to trade. In the short term, this is of course a disadvantage for us, but that is the only thing that can make him back.
The alternative would be to invite him to make even higher demands. Instead, we should change our economy to other trading partners in the long term. The United States is no longer an ally.
