Letter to the editor. Reintroducing public transport in municipal auspices

The politicians in the Riksdag decided during the 1970s and 1980s to organize about public transport. The municipal organization by bus, local trains, trams and ferries would instead obey a regional organization. The idea was that travel between and in the municipalities in the same region would be made more easy to handle and attractive.

Previously, the difference in prices and the range of line races could shift from one municipality to the other. With a regional organization, prices are uniform and the opportunity to link their journey from one line to another across municipal boundaries becomes clearer and easier.

The ambitions of the regional organization are enforced by officials in order to get the public to go collectively. Now, a few decades later, it can be stated that this work is well on its way to succeed. The conditions for the individual traveler have improved. The statistics indicate that travel has increased. More people put the car and take the bus. It’s good for everyone. We must leave the fossil history and invest in a green future, which means a collective travel for both city and rural areas.

We are located However, in a present where the bus, tram, local train and ferry are managed by a human being of flesh and blood. A person who must be able to do his work, without being invisible and nonchalated.

The regions’ ambition to create better conditions for travelers has created a deteriorating working environment for bus drivers as the regional public transport authority is not represented at the trade union negotiating table. This is how the distance between the client is created at one end and the profession to perform the work at the other end. This distance has become increasingly clear, I mean. The tender procedures on which today’s public transport is based are primarily designed for travelers. They are designed to create an attractive alternative and cost -effective management of citizens’ tax money.

During the two decades I have run a bus in city traffic, regional organizational development is seen in a tangible way. More people mean more situations that require patience, which in turn leads to more travelers with poor attitude. The visa duty that still exists takes unnecessarily much time and often you end up in discussions with travelers who mean « … but I just have to ».

More travelers Also involves more mobile calls on board, where the label on conversations shifts greatly. Sitting alone in the bus with travelers in different day forms has always been worried. With the increasing amount of travelers, that turmoil has become ever greater. Being filmed and photographed to be suspended on social media now belongs to everyday life.

Many of these situations could change for the better with, for example, double staffing on messy tours and lines, ticket visa outside the bus at larger stops and more external ticket checks aboard the buses. Make the front half of the bus quiet from calls and other sounds from the mobile! Place higher demands on the contractor that reports on threats and violence should be followed up with a clear measure in each case.

Working as a bus driver today has a negative impact. I would like to say that I am a worse person today than 22 years ago, much because of the result of the regional tender procedure.

A « traveler promise » is an example of an ambition where the contractor wants to follow the regional client’s goals. In this promise, it is thought that the needs of all travelers from the start of the journey should meet. The purpose is for the « promise » to generate quality and confidence both with ongoing tenders and for a future tender procedure.

This « adaptation » only reinforces the price that the individual bus driver ultimately pays. There are no ambitions from employers in the bus industry to submit proposals for a « bus driver’s promise ». The contractors who participate in the regional public transport tender procedure do not scare a tender.

The future of public transport must be about the staff who are to carry out regions’ stated goals. It is the bus driver who must be respected and updated, not the traveler. If the status of the bus driver’s profession is raised, respect comes with and thus a positive experience to travel by bus.

We are today in a mode Where it is almost impossible to recruit new bus drivers. Too few want to drive a bus. Salary and other remuneration do not meet the requirements. Working hours are often difficult. The level of education is insufficient and the security inside the bus is completely insufficient.

The discussion about the regional organization’s impact on the staff that will perform their visions is extremely important. Today’s disastrous work environment in public transport is a direct result of the fact that once in a while, municipal operations were left.

Put down the tenders at regional level! Reinstate public transport in municipal organization, in favor of the bus drivers.
