Letter to the editor. It is a shame that we demand money for citizenship

We can now find out daily how US President Donald Trump is dismantling the rule of law. Laws and courts are attacked. What we thought were important democratic principles no longer have any value.

Safe employment also does not exist. Primarily, it is immigrants and poor people who are affected, but also all who have worked in the American welfare system.

But what is it like in Sweden? Here are we still safe? No, at least not if we belong to the large group that immigrated and who now want to become Swedish citizens.

Already in the time island It was clear that the new government wanted to impair the conditions for all those who immigrated to Sweden. Here Sweden lay ahead of Trump.

One of the proposals presented by the government and the Swedish Democrats is aimed at those who immigrated. They should not believe that they can become citizens. What has previously been obvious no longer applies.

Now is required to become a Swedish citizen a gross income in at least 20 000 SEK a month. According to Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M), it is about « reinforcing security ». Here, no poor patches should be released over the threshold.

I can’t let go To remind you what the national bald Verner von Heidenstam said in his « citizen song » from the turn of the last century: « It is shame, it is stain in Sweden’s banner, that civil rights are called money. »

Then it was about the universal voting rights, which the right of the time by all means tried to stop. Now it is about the citizenship that gives voting rights to those who are citizens. This is what the present right wants to make it difficult in every way.

Now it is about having a monthly income of at least SEK 20,000. If you have a spouse who earns less than SEK 20,000 a month, that person cannot become a citizen.

Every adult person Must, according to the Minister of Migration, be able to support himself. According to him, it is gender equality policy that women are not treated separately.

Citizenship has thus become a matter of money. All of us who have been lucky enough to be born as Swedish citizens do not have the requirement that we have income of at least SEK 20,000 a month.

We may be affected by illness and unemployment or have low incomes. It does not make our citizenship impossible. The same conditions should apply to those who, for various reasons, have been forced here as refugees or job seekers.

So let me finish with traveting Heidenstam: It is shame, it is stain in Sweden’s banner, that citizenship is called money.
