Letter to the editor. Indented support to Palme’s center threatens our democracy

The government has done so again: on the order of the Swedish Democrats becomes Olof Palme’s international center off with its side support of SEK 68 million. Not a penny should go to the labor movement’s solidarity work. Of course, it is no coincidence – it is a conscious cleansing.

The Palme Center makes it banned in today’s political climate: it stands for international solidarity, trade union rights and human dignity. But such arouses suspicion in times, where « left » has become a curse and opposition is regarded as unfairness.

A few weeks ago, Moderates party secretary Carin Enström – completely unashamed – suggested that Magdalena Andersson (S) should resign as party leaders. What was it, a spontaneous thought from a political rival? Or the beginning of something worse?

We are starting to see the contours A new political landscape, where freedom of association is eroded and the opposition is expected to be silent. What will be the next step – to ban the Social Democrats from standing in elections?

This is not satire. It is Sweden 2025.

Olof Palme called solidarity our obligation. Today, it seems to be something that the government would prefer to delete from memory – along with everything reminiscent of the labor movement’s contribution to democracy. We are many who remember.

And we don’t think forget. Those who want to dismantle democracy do so in panic – because they know that the future is not theirs.
