Letter to the editor. Government’s lateness in media cases is a shame
The media case ”has the highest priority ”Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard told TT. It is about Swedish journalist Joakim Medin imprisoned in Turkey. « High priority » means for the minister that at the end of the week she will meet Turkish representatives at a NATO meeting. Maybe it could be an opportunity to take up the case in a coffee break?
The Foreign Minister exhibits the same pity for despots as her representative Tobias Billström (M), as during the NATO negotiations to TT answered « yes » to the question of Turkey was a democracy. In addition, he apologized to Erdogan for the Swedish freedom of speech after a doll with Erdogan hung up in front of the City Hall. It is the action that Medin is now incorrectly alleged to have been involved in.
Imprisoned journalist Joakim Medin works at the red -green newspaper Dagens ETC, a publication that the Swedish Democrats denied accreditation at the party’s National Days 2023.
In a post On Twitter 2016, MP Linus Bylund (SD) wrote about journalists: « You are and remain this nation’s enemies. » In an interview in February 2020, Bylund, when Chief of Staff SD, said that public service journalists should be able to « be punished individual for bias ». After the 2022 election, Bylund looked forward to « push journalists » in what he called « Journalist Rugby ». In a 2014 tweet, SD politician Kent Ekeroth stated that the media should be stopped in « time ».
Has Maria Malmer Stenergard gone too long on her SD buddies and taken the impression of their views on journalists? Whatever the reasons for the minister’s lateness in the media, she may be a shame for the principles our country stands for.
