Letter to the editor. Facing majority decisions to avoid the paralysis NATO
In many cases, the treaty for international organizations formed after the Second World War requires consensus to make decisions. The reason for this is likely to be a desire to prevent minor states from being discriminated against by stronger – a very excellent ideal.
More recently, however, it has proven to be an excellent remedy for extortion from different states. Trump, Orbán and Erdogan have threatened to block decisions that virtually all other Member States, large and small, voted for.
Orbán and Erdogan have tried to prevent Sweden from becoming a member of NATO. We know that Orbán may be prepared to put in a veto that the EU further supports Ukraine financially, but probably also militarily. The same applies to membership in the EU.
How is the situation If Trump opposes NATO Article 5 on collective defense to be applied if Europe is attacked by Russia? Erdogan may very well threaten to prevent Ukraine from becoming a member of NATO, to please Putin.
For the same reason, Trump may want to refuse Ukraine membership in NATO. Minority protection can thus threaten to completely prevent the organizations’ ability to operate in each core area.
The Swedish government must therefore work to renegotiate the treaty to introduce a system of different degrees of qualified majority for different types of cases, and which is so well balanced that no nation can paralyze and organization.
