Letter to the editor. Do not close the door for international adoptions
Government Investigator Anna Singer proposes that international adoptions are stopped. That would be a serious mistake.
All children have the right to a family and a future. In many countries, there are no resources to take care of orphans.
If Sweden closes the door – who should take responsibility? Although only 34 children were adopted to Sweden last year, the need is much greater. Every year, about 10,000 international adoptions take place in the world – perhaps an increasing figure given the world situation.
That some adoptions In history, it has been done on erroneous grounds is serious, but it must not be an argument to completely close the opportunity. Instead, we should introduce clear rules: no money may be exchanged, the child’s background must be documented and follow -up must be done.
Adopted in Sweden are not strangers – they are Swedes. In addition, Swedish children contribute other origins and appearance in schools and communities to increased diversity and understanding, which reduces the risk of xenophobia.
Sweden has been a country that has stretched out a helping hand. Let it remain so – with responsibility, but without closing the door for children who need a future.
