Letter to the editor. Become a member of the Swedish Church to be able to influence

We stand in the hall, the father and I, when he suddenly say: « Now I know that I am a Christian – but I am not a member of the Swedish Church. »

This is not the first time I hear it. Many participate in our operations. They sing in chorus, come on family days, go in talks and on worship services – but have not taken the step of becoming members. Maybe it’s not that strange. Almost everything we do is open and free. It is part of the church’s message. And at the same time: How do we get these church engaged people to also want to be members?

We live in a time where almost everything is measured in performance, status, followers. A time when we constantly need to prove our value, that we are enough. But the church stands for something completely different. Here you do not need to perform. Prove that you deserve love. Here you are already valuable. Here you loved as the one you are.

But why Should you be a member of the Swedish Church? On September 21, it is church elections. As a member you can vote in the church election. Together, we help the church continue to be an open meeting place for everyone. For those who do not get help anywhere else. For children to have a place they can play, young people think freely and elderly be seen. A church that prioritizes equality, humanity and climate justice.

The church is included in everyday life and party, in laughter and tears. In pillow room, at campfires and around coffee tables. And in the midst of all this there is also something bigger we gather around – a belief, a direction, a message that it is never run.

The church needs you. Not just as a participant. Without as a member. As co -creators. So – what do you want the church to be? Come. Join us. We are a church together.
