Let’s not be like Le Pen (comment)

Peter Tkačenko responds to the commentary of Jakub Fil.

After the condemnation of Marine Le Pen and her accomplices for the MEP tunneling, it was clear that the usual suspects were heard. In a tight competition when a Kremlin spokesman complains of violations of democratic standards and Viktor Orbán He calls « is Suis Marine », let’s declare the winner of Orbán.

Not that it wasn’t ridiculous when in Alexei’s country Navaľný They say something about democracy, but Orbán’s words have several interesting levels. It can be mischievously laughed at his move into the female body, but also ironically to see that Fidesz really approaches European resources very similarly.

But at least in Slovakia, we could say the same about the three -quarters of the political scene, if not straight for the whole. This is not to be questioned by the decision of the French courts, they certainly follow the best conscience and laws. Some may not like it, but the French have the right to them and the courts are bound by them.

It is an appeal not to be carried away to unwanted places when applauding and calling for the truncation of political rights.

Why do you hide this, this is a reaction especially to yesterday the text of a colleague of Jakub Fila. In addition to the praise evaluation of the verdict, he stated that among the basic defense mechanisms of democracy should be the exclusion of (probably lifetime) people convicted in connection with the performance of political function from the administration of public affairs.

For if « corrupt politicians, criminals and mafios » come to power, they will abuse it for revenge and degradation of democracy. Such as Robert Fico. But it is a very shaky and selective construct.

After all, Fico was not convicted and we see what he was doing. Finally, nor Le Penová It has not been yet, and until it exhausts the remedies, it will be considered innocent from the point of view of French law, just without the possibility to run.

Therefore, if we want to be consistent in arguing with revenge by political means, we will have to dramatically expand the circle of banning the candidacy of the affected citizens. To all who have a reason for revenge and personality prerequisites for its implementation by political means? Or just some? And it will be who?

And let’s look at Le Pen’s offense: The essence is that MEPs have engaged fictitious assistants who did not work (only) for them, but developed internal politically motivated activity for the parent side.

This is what the Slovak (euro) of deputies is out of? Three? And everyone else is corrupt politicians, criminals and mafia to whom they need to establish claws and lifetime to withdraw the right to apply for elected functions? (Not.)

Even if we do not go to the dystopic scenario like a minority report and some Black Mirror episode, it is clear how many denying access to the elected authorities can be misused. Indeed, one of the definition elements of democracy is the equality of the political rights of citizens.

The effort to reach the political ending of restrictive measures always stinks with unwanted consequences. Maybe they reach for them, because in Slovakia the courts of two deputies ĽSNS They deprived the mandate and dissolved the entire fascist party. However, these must be extremely well justified exceptions.

Perhaps the best warning will be a paradox: it was Le Pen herself, who at the beginning of a political career attacked corrupt politicians, who would prefer to take the opportunity to run in the elections. And when Le Pen comes up with some idea, it will be most sensible to maintain strict restraint.
