Taliso Engel was born in Lauf an der Pegnitz in Bavaria in June 2002 and is therefore 22 years old today. His hometown is around 17 kilometers east of Nuremberg and is part of the Nuremberg metropolitan region. As a child, Engel, who has a innate visual impairment, started swimming. « I still see six to eight percent on my better eye and there are still three to four percent on my worse, » he told RTL. In 2018 he won the bronze medal in the discipline 100 meters at the Tender age of 16 at the European Championships in Dublin. As a result of an otitis media that led to a eardrum tear, Taliso Engel lost his hearing on the right ear in 2023. But the para swimmer could not be stopped either: in 2024 he set up another world record at the Paralympics in Paris in the lead of the men with visual impairment – with 1: 01.84 minutes he covered the 100 meter breast swimming and received the gold medal in the final. The para swimmer currently lives in Nuremberg and studies fitness training and management alongside his sporting career.
