Some genealogical sites specify the city of origin: Turin. Among the ancestors of the new Pope also French and Spanish French

Also Pope Leone XIV Like Pope Francis would Piedmontese ancestry? In Turin many are already convinced of it. But the information provided by the Vatican press room, in the official biography of the new pontiff, do not go into detail: they just say that Robert Francis Prevost He was born in Chicago in 1955, son of « Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian origin, and Mildred Martínez, of Spanish origin ». And so, waiting for the Holy See to give further information, the genealogists are unleashed.

The document of the Chicago census office

Checking in the online archives of the office of the Population of Chicago, for the year 1950, to pages n. 3, Riga 17 (see here the document in PDF)the family of John R. Prevostby profession « teacher of Romance languages », born in Italy, but without any indication of the city (next to him, the French wife Suzanne Fabre and his son John C.). To get some more information, then you have to squeeze the genealogical trees uploaded to the Wikitoe website, to find that John Prevost (but here it is registered in French as Jean Lanti Prevost) He would be born on June 24, 1876 in Turin and died in 1960 in Evergreen Park, in Illinois. Emigrated to the USA, he had married in Chicago Suzanne Louise Marie Fabre (1896-1979) and the couple then had two children: John Centi Prevost (1917-1996) and Louis Marius Prevost (1920-1997); The latter, is the Pope’s father.

The Turin origin

At the moment, the Turin registry does not confirm the birth of Jean L.Prevost. It could therefore have been born in one of the municipalities of the district. Also on the Wikitoe website, however, in the annotations on the sidelines of the prevost tree, it is said that perhaps the original name could be Giovanni Provosto. Checking in the Ellis Island Foundation Archive, where the passengers’ lists that emigrated between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to America, in the list of the British ship’s emigrants, sailed from Havre to New York on 6 April 1903, also appear, the brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Provide of Settosto Route, common at the gates of Turin, also appear. Perhaps, that’s where you have to look for the origins of the new pontiff.

Leo XIV, the Italian origin of the Pope: the document of the US registry that would confirm it, the grandfather was a teacher

Whether it is, prevost or provost, French or Piedmontese, the ancient meaning of the « priest » is. In short, for Pope Leo XIV in his surname the fate was already written.
