Layec: HNL clubs will get shots from the VAR room! And football in Croatia is sometimes sad
Experienced retired French judge Bertrand Layec (59) accepted a simple job last year. He combined the jobs of the President of the Commission of the HNS Football Judges and the delegation commissioner, and inherited Bruno Maric in that position. Last season, she was especially turbulent in terms of trial at the HNL, recorded by the fact that foreign judges were running derby at the end of the season.
We didn’t watch that movie this season. Layec believed in Croatian judges in Derbia, especially Patrik Kolarić and Mateo Erceg. The head of Croatian judges, who has a contract with the HNS until June 2026, revealed that the HNS Commission of Judges will send shots from the VAR room next season.
– For the next season, we will ask all clubs to accept this change and to be referred to communication between judges and VAR after each round. This is a logical and normal step forward, as is done in all major European leagues – Layec told Sport Novosti, adding why it wasn’t done this season.
– When the club’s requests were submitted, there were already 30th rounds and it seems impossible to change the rule only on the basis of an official letter in the middle of the season – he commented.

He did not spend a lot of words to describe the quality in the highest rank of Croatian football.
– I was familiar with Croatian temperament and tensions between certain clubs. Watching all the HNL matches, there are huge differences in quality from match to match. The conditions for the game are sometimes sad and do not allow quality football – concluded the head of Croatian referees.
