Latvia will be represented by artists and designers Bruno Birmanis and Mareunrol’s / Day at the Venice Biennale at the International Art Exhibition at the International Art Exhibition
The Latvian pavilion will be formed by the Society Latvian Contemporary Art Center, curators Inga Lace and Adoma Narkevichius, project manager – Austra Berzina.
The Venice Biennale 61 will take place from May 9, 2026 to November 22, its curator in Kojo Kuo (Koyo kouoh).
The Latvian exhibition will study the history of Latvian fashion avant -garde. The project application states: “The Undersistent Fashion Assembly was an experimental series of art and avant -garde fashion events that took place in Riga in the 1990s. The Latvian Pavilion in Venice will be a new interpretation and celebration of this diverse event. Designers, but also on visual and performances will be in the center of the Latvian Pavilion. The audience will be unseen.
“The project is based on the research process and redefining with a local emphasis on the international sound. Working with archives and remembering the topical issues of the 20th century visual culture, where experiments played an important role in violating the use of fashion borders and giving new avant -garde trends in our art. Reflecting on this topic, preserving the independent spirit and offering a contemporary interpretation, the artist working today looks at another view, ”comments Māra Lace, chairman of the jury (LNMM), chairman of the jury.

Applications for the design competition were evaluated by the jury under the leadership of Mara Lace, Director of the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM), and served in the Estonian Center of Contemporary Art Center (Estonian Center for Contemporary Art) Director Maria Aruso (Maria Arusoo) and Warsaw Museum of Modern Art (Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw) curator sebastian cičockis (Sebastian Cichocki), Līga Marcinkeviča, Head of the Master’s program of the Latvian Academy of Arts (LAA) and producer Kitty Vasilyeva, producer at the 56th and 59th Venice Art Biennale.
Latvia’s participation in the 61 Venice Art Biennale is funded by the Ministry of Culture. Funding for the exposition – EUR 162,140 (including VAT).
