Latvia has retreated to the 15th place / day in the press freedom index
The RSF study concludes that freedom of the press in the world has reached the lowest level of all time, but journalists can work in Europe. The general global situation in the press is described as complex.
« In 2025, the press freedom situation in the world was at the lowest level of all time, » the organization points out, adding that « more than half of the world’s population lives in countries where the press freedom is » very serious « ».
From the world regions, journalists can still do their job in Europe, according to a RSF study.
Norway is still the highest in the rankings, Estonia has climbed second place by four positions, and the Netherlands has climbed one position to third place.
Losing one position, Sweden ranks fourth in the World Press Freedom Index this year, Finland remained fifth, while Denmark has lost four positions and resigned to sixth. In one place, seventh place is in Ireland. In these seven countries, all in Europe, the situation in the field of press freedom is considered good.
Lithuania is one place higher than Latvia in 14th place, which is one position lower than last year. In the countries ranked 8th to 42nd, the press freedom situation is described as satisfactory. In addition to Lithuania and Latvia, this group also has, for example, Germany (11th place, -1), the United Kingdom (20th place, +3 positions), Canada (21st place, -7 positions), France (25th place, -4 positions), Poland (31st place, +16 positions).
In countries 43-90, the situation is assessed as problematic. These countries include Italy (49th place, -3 positions), Romania (55th place, -6 positions), USA (57th place, -2 positions), Ukraine (62nd place, -1 position), Japan (66th place, +4 positions), Hungary (68th place, -1 position), Greece (89th place, -1 position).
There is a difficult situation in the countries that are ranked 91-138. This group has Georgia (114th place, -11 positions) and Libya (137th place, +6 positions).
On the other hand, a very serious threat to the freedom of the press is in countries 139-180. Among these countries are Kazakhstan (141st place, +1 position), Iraq (155th place, +14 positions), Turkey (159th place, -1 position), Belarus (166th place, +1 position), Russia (171st place, -9 position), China (178th place, -6, -6 positions), North Korea (179th place, -2 position) in the rating.
« In addition to the unstable security situation and the growing authoritarianism, the media around the world, economic pressure is caused by economic pressure, » which hinders the focus on false information, misinformation and propaganda, the organization said.
The report concludes that the media sustainable problems are in 160 countries around the world.
The media is closed in almost a third of the world’s countries, including the US, Argentina, in the 87th place (21 places below) and Tunisia, which ranks 129th (11 places below).
In total, the total freedom of the press in 112 countries has worsened.
The press rating in the press assesses the situation in five categories of countries or territories: politics, justice, economics, social and cultural, and security.
The rating was published before the International Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on Saturday.
