Latvia elected to the UN Security Council / Day

In order for Latvia to become a volatile member of the Council, it was necessary to obtain the support of two -thirds of the UN Member States.

Latvia was a candidate for the elected member of the UN DP and remained the only candidate from the Eastern Europe group. By January 31, Latvia was in rivalry with Montenegro, but Montenegro decided to withdraw its candidacy.

This year, Latvia was nominated by Latvia from the Eastern European Group, Congo and Liberia from the African Group, Colombia from the Latin America and the Caribbean Group and Bahrain of Asia and the Pacific Group.

In the event of the election, Latvia has promised to advocate for cooperation between the UN Member States, the regional organization and the civil society to strengthen its resilience, promote long -term peace and security, achieve sustainable development and not neglect anyone.

Latvia believes that conflicts, protection of civilians in armed conflicts and peaceful disputes should continue to be a major priority for the UN, including through mediation and peace maintenance.

Latvia is in favor of the UN DP’s greater responsibility, coherence and openness. Latvia supports UN DP reforms to increase its effectiveness in solving international problems.

Latvia is defending the international legal order. Latvia supports the prosecution of international law and the fight against impunity as a prerequisite for fair and sustainable peace.

Latvia recognizes that there is an urgent need for responsible action to achieve the goals of sustainable development. Improving long -term resistance is particularly important in combating the growing climate crisis and sea level rise.

Latvia will continue to operate in the multilateral system to strengthen solidarity and joint efforts by supporting vulnerable groups and developing countries affected by political and social tensions, poverty, environmental and water -related challenges.

Latvia, which has been in favor of gender equality, promotion of women’s education and participation for a long time, assesses the crucial role of the program « Women, Peace and Security » in ensuring international peace and sustainable development. Latvia will continue to advocate for women’s rights, including supporting the victims of sexual violence in armed conflicts.

Latvia believes that reducing the digital crack between countries, cities and rural areas, gender and age groups is the key to durability and opportunities for everyone. Latvia will continue to actively engage in security issues in the digital and information space, including the field of artificial intelligence.
