The Sulzberg climate activist Karl Braig sat in the Kempten correctional facility for five months. Now the 69-year-old Oberallgäuer is again at a free time: « I am mentally somewhat good. Sure, there were always situations where you have a low and asks yourself, it has to be and how useful is that at all, » he says shortly after his release on Thursday morning in Kempten. Braig had that Protests of the self -proclaimed « last generation » connected and stuck onto the street in Passau. For this he was convicted by a court.

The Oberallgäuer did not want to pay the penalty of 500 euros. Before the prison, he explains that he had also received three years on probation. He decided on the prison sentence. Now he says: « I have made it, for five months, » reports the 69-year-old, who has been fighting for his beliefs for many decades. According to the circumstances, he was well in the prison that he had read and followed the political events.
While the “last generation” has withdrawn, according to Braig, the new generation is now forming, which still wants to imagine the public. « We want to make a parliament of people right in front of the Bundestag, » he gives an insight. It is about democratization, his heart project. Politicians are led by lobbyists and « this is not the way that makes sense, » said the Sulzberger.

There was also a lot of criticism in the “last generation”, the actions were too violent for many people. On streets that were blocked by the activists, there were sometimes violent clashes. « We didn’t like to do that, » replies Braig of criticism. But considering what it is about, namely more consistent climate protection, it was necessary.
Friends picked up the 69-year-old at the prison in Kempten: « We go breakfast and then go hiking into nature, » says Braig. And he still announces that it is likely to strive for a lawsuit before the Federal Constitutional Court. Because there was no vegan food for him in the prison. In his view, however, this is a human right. Therefore, the court should basically clarify the topic so that there will be vegan food in these facilities in the future.
