No less than 88 percent of Flemish officials say they are happy to do their work and 85 percent feel good at work. This is apparent from a poll with the staff of the Flemish government. Minister of Administrative Affairs Hilde Crevits (CD&V) is talking about « figures to unpack », but still wants to make progress in the field of deontology and integrity.

Every two years the Flemish government gauges satisfaction with its staff. In 2024, 42 entities took part in this, good for 15,636 employees. The Flemish government remains attractive as an employer. For example, 85 percent likes to work for his or her organization and 73 percent are proud to work for the government. Furthermore, 78 percent would recommend the Flemish government as an employer and 90 percent indicate that it does valuable work for society.

Many results are an improvement compared to the previous poll. 79 percent of the participants say they can follow useful training courses and 85 percent learn at work. There is a remarkable improvement if you are asked about the possibilities of internal mobility and career opportunities: 56 percent are positive when it comes to opportunities to change function within the Flemish government, compared to 38 percent last time.

Diversity

In terms of diversity and inclusion, it appears that 69 percent of employees think that everyone is getting equal opportunities. Three percent feel discriminated against, and that applies especially to staff members with a foreign descent, a limitation or level D. Furthermore, the majority of staff have trust in the integrity of their organization, although 22 percent say that the organization sometimes does not function correctly.

The feeling of being rewarded correctly is divided. For example, 55 percent call the internal remuneration fair and 40 percent are satisfied with the comparison with the external market. Almost half of the staff want more flexibility in the composition of the remuneration package. According to Minister Crevits, the new salary system that staff members can opt for since 1 January 2025 can change that.

A separate survey of management has happened. He assesses the functioning of the government more positively than in 2022, but is critical of the personnel and remuneration policy when it comes to external intake or the preservation of staff members.
