In the past year, more than 100,000 bull frogs were caught in Flanders, a large increase against the start of the measurements in 2020 when ‘only’ 32,564 ended up in the nets. The American frogs pose a major threat to local fauna and flora. « We ask everyone to pass on observations so that we can better monitor the distribution. »
The American bull frog is a carrier of various diseases and eats everything that comes his way. He distinguishes himself from native frogs for his remarkable size and sound. The male frog produces a recognizable brul, which looks like the roar of a cow. The frog can grow up to 20 cm and weighs more than 500 grams.
In recent years, it has been strongly focused on combating the bull frog. Especially in pre -planting rinsing and the edges of the distribution area, the frogs were caught to prevent further spread. In 2024, more than 100,000 bull frogs ended up in the safety nets, a large increase compared to four years earlier, when only 32,564 frogs were caught. These catches are essential to limit the expansion of the species and to be able to take targeted measures.
Monitor distribution
« We ask everyone to pass on observations via observation.be, preferably with a photo, so that we can better monitor the distribution, » says Alain de Vocht, project coordinator of the Life 3n-Bierkikker project. « We do not carry out large -scale actions within the core area of the Grote Nete for the time being, but individual and municipal initiatives remain possible. »
The LIFE project 3N-Bierkikker stems from a collaboration between Hogeschool PXL, the Institute for Nature and Forest Research, Natuurpunt vzw and Natuur & Bos of the Flemish government.
During this project they join forces to combat the American bull frog sustainably and stop the distribution of it in Flanders. Anyone who sees or hears an American bull frog can pass this on on the website of observation.be
The MOL city council also calls on residents to immediately report bull frogs.
