Large fire in forest area near Brabantse Drunen, NL-Alert sent
A natural fire broke out in a forest on the Kanaalweg in Drunen in Noord-Brabantse. The emergency services speak of one « Very big fire ». The fire can still expand, says the fire brigade. An NL-Alert has been sent, with which people in the area have been called to leave the forest immediately.
The precise size of the fire is still unclear. A police helicopter has been deployed to map the area from the air. The fire rages just outside the village, in the nearby National Park De Loonse and Drunense Duinen is not a fire.
Several fire brigade units have been called to fight fire. The extinguishing is expected to take ‘quite some time’.
In the past month there have been almost as many natural fires as in the whole of 2024. That has to do with the persistent drought, strong wind and exceptionally warm temperatures. Last month alone, an estimated eighty fires were reported.
In many places in the Netherlands, no rain has fallen for two months, while several heat records were also broken. In the past two weeks, the fire brigade had to turn to, among other things, De Meinweg nature reserve in Limburg and the Hei at Ede.
