Language as an attitude / day
This year only in grades 3, 6 and 9 could still be implemented in minority programs. The State Education Quality Service (IKVD) evaluated 72 educational institutions in the six months of the school year, including in Ludza County, and only three were found repeatedly deficiencies, but 14 schools came to the vision of the evaluators, as their 9th grade graduates continued their studies in vocational schools. Read about this and other current events in today’s newspaper.
However, in this context, the main issue arises – as it is possible that more than 30 years after the restoration of Latvia’s independence, there are still a large number of educators in our education system who are unable to communicate qualitatively in the official language, which is and will be one – Latvian. The only thing that comes to mind is that it has been first and for some non -Latvian educators is still reluctant to speak Latvian. Perhaps someone with an inner hope that once in Latvia will officially establish bilingualism. Don’t expect – it will never happen!
It seems that such educators’ attitudes towards the official language have also been possible because it has been made directly or indirectly by both the heads of educational institutions and the leadership of each other. Of course, you can try to tell the tales publicly that this situation has been made, fearing that there would be a major lack of educators if they had to dismiss the official language at an appropriate level.
You can already try to create a public fuss in this regard, as in January, Daugavpils Municipality, its head Andrejs Elksniņš, in the case of the State Language Center (VVC) in Daugavpils, to test the official language skills for city teachers. At that time, A. Elksniņš even allowed himself to say that the VVC’s official language tests were « hanging » by teachers. Meanwhile, Marina Isupova, the head of the Daugavpils Education Board, said that teachers who « do not hold the nerves » and who felt violated with regular tests.
In this regard, I want to say exactly – if someone « does not hold the nerves » or feels « hanging » because they are asking for the law, then maybe we go a big step ahead – we start squeezing to pay taxes, not driving a car without appropriate documents, etc.?
The proficiency of the official language at an appropriate level is the certification of respect and loyalty to the state. Conversely, its ignorance or deliberate use is disrespectful. So simple.
