Lagarde says Trump fares will « end up the world »
The president of the European Central Bank (ECB) said on Wednesday that the tariffs to be announced by the US President will « destabilize the world of commerce, as we know it »
In Donald Trump’s so -called « Liberation Day » for the US, Christine Lagarde said the impact of the announcement of tariffs « will not be good for those who impose tariffs or those who retaliate. »
« From today, when they should be announced, we do not really know what the agreement will be for the rest of the world, what we know is that it will not be good for the global economy, » he added in an interview with The Pat Kenny Show Ir Kenny show,,
According to the President of the PCK, « the density and durability of the impact (tariffs) vary depending on its scope, the products for which they are intended, their duration and the existence or not of negotiations. »
Lagarde has avoided, however, giving his opinion on how the EU should respond to rates, since it is something that « must be decided by political leaders. »
« Our work in the ECB is to anticipate, to explain to them (to political leaders) what will be the consequences in terms of economic impact, because, in any case, it will be negative around the world, » he insisted.
The president considers that tariffs also represent a « opportunity » for Europe to be more self -sufficient, in what he called « the beginning of a march to independence. »
« We should not focus exclusively on what is happening on the other side of the ocean, we should focus on the strength we have at home (Europe) and the way we can recover the independence we do not have, this applies to defense, trade, finances and how money circulates in Europe, » he said.
The European Commission has ensured that it will respond at the right time to Trump’s announcement of reciprocal commercial tariffs to the European Union (EU), indicating that the community bloc is « in waiting mode. »
