Westtoer recorded 1.6 million tourist overnight stays, 10 percent more than last year. Especially the weekends, and certainly the Easter weekend, scored well. Although the Easter holidays in Walloon schools only start on 26 April, French -speaking Belgians were good for a fifth of the number of overnight stays. About 15 percent of the guests come from abroad.
1.3 million day tourists also found their way to the coast, an increase of 20 percent compared to last year. Saturday 12 and Saturday 19 April were the top days with around 125,000 visitors each. The sunny weather was an extra stimulus for coastal tourism and the summer atmosphere clearly showed itself on the dike terraces and in the beach bars.
The average occupation in the coastal hotels for this Easter holiday was 60 percent, the Easter weekend had an average occupation of 85 percent. The other two holiday weekends also scored well.
There was a lot to experience this holiday on the coast. There was the start of the Street art festival The Crystal Ship in Ostend. Museums and indoor attractions also attracted many visitors such as the Panamarenko ‘Zoo aan Zee’ exhibition in Knokke, photo-expo Carl De Keyzer in Westfront Nieuwpoort, Navigo and Paul Delvaux Museum in Koksijde-Oostduinkerke, Ensorhuis in Oostende and Hey Museum in Knokke. Other popular events included the Elle-Run in Knokke-Heist and the #likeme search in Middelkerke.
« We hope that this Easter holiday, together with the already successful crocus holiday, is a nice harbinger for what we can expect in 2025, » says coast manager at Westtoer Ellen Bruynoghe.
