Kurds refuse to recognize new Syrian government

The Kurdish authorities in northwestern Syria announced the new Syrian transitional government under the leadership of President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Sunday. International press agencies report this. Al-Sharaa presented the transitional government on Saturday, which the country must drive for the next five years. He appointed 23 ministers and remains at the head of the cabinet.

The Kurdish leaders criticize the composition of the government. According to them, the government does not represent the « diversity and plurality » of the Syrian population. They therefore do not feel bound by the decisions of the new government.

Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria. Although the government has one Kurdish minister, it does not come from the area governed by the Kurds in the North. The other minority groups in the country-the Christians, Druzen and Alawites, the religious minority to which former dictator Bashar al-Assad belonged-are each represented with one minister. However, none of these ministers received an influential portfolio: the most important posts went to confidants of Al-Sharaa.
