Kristersson: « Intense contacts » with Turkey about Joakim Medin


Joakim Medin is charged in Turkey, suspected of terrorist offenses and for insulting Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He risks 12 years in prison if he is sentenced in the trial that begins against him on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) says that there is currently « intense contacts » with Turkey to get rid of Medin.

« But I’m not going to go into it. »

« It is an incredibly sensitive question, and we do everything we can, but do not intend to say anything that can make it difficult in the case, » Kristersson writes in a text message to DN.

ETC journalist Joakim Medin traveled to Turkey on March 27 to monitor the nationwide protests that followed the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. He was arrested shortly after he landed and later brought to the Marmaraian exit outside Istanbul.

Andreas Gustavsson, editor -in -chief of Dagens ETC, writes at X that Joakim Medin has been informed about the charges and that on Sunday he should meet his legal team to prepare for the trial.

The trial starts at 14 on Wednesday and Joakim Medin is expected to attend a link from prison.
