Kohlmits defends title as the most common winter bird of Luxembourg

This year, too, the cabbage is defending its title as the most common species of birds in the annual Wantervull make -up of Natur & ëmwelt. In 89 percent of the gardens she was able to assert her top position and thus remains number one among the feathered guests of Luxembourg.

At the weekend from 24th to January 26th, 2025, over 300 volunteers took part in the large bird count. The aim was to watch the feathered visitors in the gardens and on the balconies for an hour and to document their number. A total of 10,091 birds were counted, which corresponds to an average of around 31 birds per counting point.

The five most common species

In addition to the cabbage, which occurred in 85 percent of the gardens, the blue trip took second place with 81.2 percent. Densified by the blackbird with 80.9 percent. The robin (71 percent) and the house sparrow (68 percent) were also frequently sighted and complete the list of the five most frequently observed species.

However, this year's count brought an unexpected development: the star was the most frequently observed bird this year and thus replaced the house sparrow in this category. The social birds appeared in large swarms and impressed with their number.

Every year, the focal vulving provides valuable data about the domestic bird world and its inventory development. The continuous participation of volunteers enables changes to be recognized at an early stage and, if necessary, take protective measures.
