Knossos: Dolphin frescoes were removed from dolphin frescoes that collapsed

On Friday night, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion completed the collection and removal of fragments from the frescoes of the dolphins that suddenly collapsed at noon last Friday.

According to ekriti.gr., This is a historical copy of 1960 as the original is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, from the so -called « Queen’s Apartments ».

The frescoes – made of gypsum – was detached because of the stormy winds blowing in the area, and due to adverse weather conditions the operation of the archaeological site was temporarily interrupted. According to preliminary estimates, two of the three parts have broken and have suffered serious damage.

The collapse was recorded in the Eastern Wing of the Palace, which has already been excluded and will remain closed until younger, for safety and evaluation of the damage.

Reflection on poor maintenance status

The serious incident raises serious questions about the maintenance of the archaeological site, which despite the enormous traffic has been left to its fate according to the local media.

Neakriti.gr, in fact, noted that at the time of the collapse, about 300 visitors were inside the archaeological site and was shortly after 12 noon, after the evacuation decision was already taken due to strong winds.

The incident is causing strong reflection as, as guides, bodies and archaeologists complain, they have been warning of the poor maintenance of the site and the need for restoration for years, without any substantial solution.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture, the necessary maintenance and rehabilitation studies have already been prepared for this particular part of the Minoan Palace of Knossos and the project is being initiated, in the context of projects funded by the Crete-NSRF 2021-2027.
