Kendrick Lamar celebrated on Bet Awards: House wears 3 awards
Kendrick Lamar is the main celebrator of the BET awards on Monday, for African American actors, singers and sports stars.
The rapper « 30 for 30 » won the award for the best hip hop artist, the best album of the year, as well as the video of the video for the song « Not Like Us ».
Together with filmmaker Dave Free, he won the Video Director Award, at an event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and was aired on Bet cable television.
« Bet always worries to properly represent a culture and always put me at the center of what we present, » Lamar said on stage when receiving the award.
The presenter, comedian Kevin Hart, opened the ceremony by confessing to the 25th anniversary of the award and his « created history » on stage.
Hart started jokes, and pointed out the winners of the Beth Ultimate ICon Award Award that evening, including Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg.
Foxx received the award presented to him by Stevie Wonder and referred to his recovery path after a stroke in 2023.
« I have to be honest, when I saw in memoriam, I thought, ‘Man, that could have been me,' » he said, thinking of a part of the ceremony in which she paid tribute to the deceased.
Another award included the Best Hip Hop performer award and was awarded to the Doechii rise rapper.
« Trump uses military forces to stop protests, » Doechii said in her speech accepting the award, addressing protests against immigration and customs services in Los Angeles, where the National Guard and the American Marines are deployed.
« I want everyone to think about what kind of government it is, if every time we use our democratic rights to protest, the army deployed against us, » she added.
