Kempen young men (18) who are suspected of ant smuggling may know on 7 May punishment

The two 18-year-old Belgians who are in jail in Nairobi on suspicion of ant-smuggling may have their punishment on 7 May. Since 9 a.m. this morning the trial has resumed in court at the International Airport. But it is not certain whether both gentlemen today already know what exactly awaits them.

The two, David L. and Seppe L., were arrested on Saturday, April 5, in a hostel on the Naivasha lake.

« At the time of their arrest, they were in possession of around five thousand living ant quinnen, kept in more than two thousand tubes, » was it a few days after their arrest at the Kenyan public prosecutor.

According to the Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS), those tubes were specially designed so that the animals would not be noticed during checks in the airport and their journey to Europe or Asia – a Vietnamese man was also arrested – would survive. « The ants could survive for two months and would not be noticed by scanners at the airport, » said the KWS. « That indicates well -prepared smuggling operation. The suspects came as a tourist with the intention of smuggling the insects to Europe and Asia. »

The trial in court at the International Airport resumed at 9 am on Wednesday morning.

It is not clear whether the gentlemen today also know their precise punishment. Within three weeks, on May 7, it will only be pronounced.
