Kaunas – the country leader in the field of cultural heritage protection

Only six of the municipal cultural heritage gave a six -digit investment. The list of renovated Kaunas objects is the iconic Kaunas Town Hall, one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of the city – St. Archangel Michael (Crew) Church. Also, the interwar nuggets of UNESCO and European heritage: the legendary Kaunas Sports Hall, one of the oldest cinemas in Lithuania – Romuva. These objects have been restored with solid funding from the municipality and EU budgets.

The Kaunas Heritage Management Program, which has been operating for eleven years, is the main tool of the city for the restoration of historic buildings. Since 2015, more than two hundred buildings have been used to renovate their buildings on the initiative of Kaunas Municipality.
According to the municipality, the high results are also determined by the fact that Kaunas is one of the eight municipalities in the country, where the Real Estate Heritage Assessment Council is constantly employed. The State Cultural Heritage Commission has been carrying out an impartial assessment of municipalities since 1997, using a team of twelve independent experts. The data collected for a long time were only evaluated through funding, and later quantitative and qualitative indicators were introduced: allocating and attracting municipal funds for cultural heritage protection, heritage protection issues.
