The incidence of ulcerative colitis has increased twice in the last 10 to 15 years, and Crohn’s diseases have even three times, ”observes Prof. Juozas Kupčinskas, head of Kaunas Clinic Gastroenterology Clinic.

These diseases are most common in people aged 20-40, but there are also cases of children or older people. « The main symptoms of ulcerative colitis are diarrhea with blood impurities and abdominal spasms. Crohn’s disease is characterized by prolonged diarrhea, accompanied by abdominal pain, » explains the professor.

Future prospects are also hopeful-Kaunas Clinics, together with the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, participate in international horizon Europe projects MIGUT-HEALTH AND PERPREV-CID, whose aims to develop even more effective, personalized treatments. « One of the projects currently ongoing is developing intestinal organoid models – we use them in scientific research to determine which of the currently available biological therapies to a particular patient is best. We hope that in the future it will help to more accurate treatment and ensure its effectiveness, » said prof. J. Kupčinskas.
