Kaunas clinic doctors first operated on an unborn fruit in Lithuania
Gabrielle remembers that the pregnancy was normal, did not suspect anything wrong or unusual. « The obstetrician gynecologist Rasa Kučinskaitė, a obstetrician in Šiauliai, was the first to notice the lesions and advised him to contact Kaunas clinics urgently, and here, before the most beautiful winter holidays, we found out that the baby’s amniotic bands around her leg around her leg, the leg was heavily compressed, » she recalls.
Prof. Eglė Machtejevienė, head of the Kaunas Clinic Fruit Medical Center, explains that amniotic band syndrome is a condition where the amniotic strip in the uterus wraps around various areas of the body, umbilical cord and disrupts blood flow in the affected area. « The interpretation of the amniotic band can lead to congenital tissue lesions or even limbs (amputation), » the professor added.
Diagnosis of amniotic band syndrome and estimated that the fetal limb was damaged but partially surviving blood flow, the most important task was to prevent complete circulation and loss of limb. « Such conditions are rare and their consequences depend on the location of the tape and the strength of the compression. Possible solutions are invasive intervention in the uterus (fetaoscopy), waiting and observation or treatment after the girl’s birth, » says Assoc. Aušra Lukošiūtė-Urbonienė, Head of Children’s Surgery Division of Kaunas Clinic Children’s Surgery.

In this case, a common fetal medical professionals, obstetrician gynecologists, pediatric surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgery doctors, neonatologists and anesthesiologists, were performed in a fetoscopy to loosen the fetus as possible.
Gabrielle and her husband Vytenis appreciated the openness of the doctors and the detailed presentation of all possible scenarios. « The doctors explained the situation clearly and openly, the potential risks, and all the possible ways.
« During the fetus, an optical system was introduced into the woman’s uterus that allowed the fetal leg to be inspected. It was heavily swollen but still viable. It was noted that the umbilical cord was also covered with amniotic bands that were distinguished. After consulting with colleagues from the United States, it was decided to constantly monitor the blood flow to the leg and, in case of impairment, to perform surgery, ”notes Assoc. Artūras Kilda, Head of Children’s Urology Sector, Kaunas Clinic Children’s Surgery Clinic.
Following the fetus, Gabrielle was regularly monitored at the Kaunas Clinic Fruit Medical Center – once a week, the ultrasound examination was evaluated by fetal calves and foot blood flow.
« At the age of 34, we noticed that the foot on the right side of the foot began to deteriorate, so it was decided to complete the pregnancy. The caesarean section was performed due to the buttocks and so the world with a preserved foot, seeing the continent, » said prof. E. Machtejevienė.

After birth, the trailer was observed to disturb the growth of the leg, so the next day, after stabilizing the condition of the newborn, she underwent surgery for the next day. « It removed the amniotic band, very carefully distinguished non -viable fabrics, trying not to damage blood vessels and nerves, remove skin scars. Finally, after consultation and collaboration with Prof. Kęstutis Braziulis, Plastic Surgery Head of Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic. A. Kilda.
In the future, the continent is waiting for rehabilitation, and perhaps additional surgical intervention if the damaged limb develops unevenly. « However, the most important thing is that we have managed to maintain the leg with blood flow – it allows it to strengthen, develop it, and we hope that the continent will be able to take its first steps in the future, » says Assoc. A. Lukošiūtė-Urbonienė.
Parents of the Continent thank the medical staff who contributed to their daughter’s treatment, the woman’s care during pregnancy. « The peace and professionalism of doctors allowed us to trust the solutions they offer on the road to the continent.
