Bezos partner Sánchez wants to go into space with five women – also Katy Perry
(dpa) – The partner of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sánchez, wants to take a short trip to space on Monday (April 14) with her husband’s rocket. There are also five other women – pop superstar Katy Perry, moderator Gayle King, the scientists Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen as well as the entrepreneur Kerianne Flynn. The most important information about the women’s excursion into space:
The start window for the short trip – whose official name « New Shepard Mission NS -31 » is – opens up on Monday (April 14th) at 3:30 p.m. CEST. However, the flight could be shifted at any time for a variety of reasons.
The best -known participant is certainly Katy Perry, many excellent singer, who celebrated world successes with songs such as « Firework », « Roar » or « I Kissed a Girl ». The 40-year-old is with the Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom, the couple has a daughter.
The moderator Gayle King, who has been working for the US broadcaster CBS for decades, is particularly well known in the United States.
Less in public, the scientists are usually the scientists Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen, both of whom used to work for the US room trip authority NASA, as well as the entrepreneur and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
This time Lauren Sánchez is particularly in the spotlight: the 55-year-old former journalist, actress and entrepreneur, who also has a helicopter flight certificate, has been with Blue Origin founder Bezos for several years, who is one of the richest people in the world.
According to the two, the two want to get married in Venice. In the run-up to the flight, Sánchez showed up at a gala event with a sparkling astronaut handbag and told the magazine « Elle » that she would « make herself glamorous » for the all-trip.
It starts in the desert in the west of Texas. The excursion to a height of around 100 kilometers above earth takes about ten minutes, temporarily with weightlessness. The “New Shepard” missile system is largely automated.
Blue Origin has been offering the short trips for space tourists for several years. Ten of them were successfully completed, according to the information there were a total of 52 people. At the first flight in 2021, founder Bezos himself was on board. Other private space companies – such as Virgin Galactic from the British entrepreneur Richard Branson or SpaceX from Tech billionaire Elon Musk – have similar offers.
Blue Origin does not provide any information about the ticket prices. Estimates are several hundred thousand dollars. Again and again the company also took celebrities as guests of honor for PR purposes – for example, the Canadian actor William Shatner, who became world famous with his role as « Captain Kirk » in « Star Trek ». Comedian Pete Davidson canceled a flight planned in 2022. This time you can also assume that not all participants have paid, at least not the full price.
There is a lot of criticism of the project. In a TV interview, the US actress Olivia Munn recently asked what many of us think, « wrote the US portal » Buzzfeed « : » Why? « Asked Munn. « I know that is probably not cool to say, but there are so many more important things in the world. The whole thing seems » insatiable « to her.
« It costs so much money to travel to space and there are so many people who can’t even afford eggs. » In addition, space travel is intended for research. « What will they do up there that it does better for us here? »
Many scientists have been criticizing space tourism for a long time, especially for climate stations. Each rocket launch represents a burden on the environment, for example, said Europe’s former space manager Jan Wörner recently in the RBB24 Inforadio. « In this respect, I hope that we will not start moving the cruise trip to space. »
