From August 1, 2025, teachers teaching subjects in Russian are required to have documentary evidence of the possession of Estonian at B2 level. Currently, according to the mayor of Narva, 75 teachers with a level less than B2 work in municipal schools of the city, writes Rus.delfi.

“We hope that they will successfully pass the exam in late May and early June and will be able to continue working at school,” Raik said.

“Now 25 teachers have already gone to take a language exam. We are counting on a positive result, then 50 teachers will remain. This is not a catastrophe. Last year, more than 60 new teachers came to the Narv schools, but this figure, taking into account not only municipal schools, but also state gymnasiums,” the mayor added.

For teachers of secondary schools teaching not in Estonian, the requirement of owning the Estonian language at B2 will enter into force on August 1, that is, after this, the school number will not be able to accept teachers whose language skills do not correspond to the level of B2.

According to the mayor, the city launches an advertising campaign now, and it will also be important to invite teachers to work those who live in Narva, has a pedagogical education, but so far for some reason has not come to work.

“We plan to resort to outsourcing services for the selection of personnel, in general, schools are already engaged in the next academic year, conducting either repeated competitions or staffing competitions,” added Larisa Degel, head of the culture department of the city council of the Narva.

“Particularly not enough primary school teachers are not enough, mathematics teachers are very needed,” Raik continued. “These may be, for example, engineers who will decide to start a new career in education. There are already such cases.”

The fact that there are not enough subject teachers in Narva was also said by the director of the Narva Estonian gymnasium Irene Kyaosaar in a recent interview with Rusdelfi. If Irene is almost sure that they will find mathematics for the next academic year, then will other schools who will need not one, but many teachers in this specialty who own Estonian so far at the level of B2, and later at the level of C1 will find a question.

At the same time, Raik noted that it is now easier to find a teacher who owns Estonian at the level of C1, than the one who knows the language at the level of B2 and teaches Russian.
