The first Golden Jefkes were awarded on Sunday evening in the Arenbergschouwburg in Antwerp, a new prize for the crumb of the Flemish Comedy. That happened during the Mad Goat comedy festival. The main prize, intended for a promising comedian who wins a 'Scholarship' with it, went to Karim Shatla. Geert Hoste received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his « lasting impact on the sector ».

The Golden Jefkes are named after the Arenberg programmer Jef Staes, who died last year, who had a big heart for Comedy. The main prize also bears its name. A jury consisting of Michael van Peel, Fokke van der Meulen and current Arenberg programmer Kim Rombauts questioned the comedy sector and ultimately selected Bruggeling Karim Shatla as the rising talent to keep an eye on and to give welcome guidance.
Of course, an award show for comedy also includes – and perhaps especially – playful prices. For example, Gunter Lamoot won the award for « best dressed » comedian, Wouter Deprez was awarded the « too easy to deal with » award, and Amelie « Amalia Aelbrecht » Albrecht received the « most wrongly written name » award. There was also a Wim Helsen award, but whoever eventually won it in all confusion, we may never know with certainty.
The Golden Jefkes will now be awarded every two years.
