Kamilla was rejected as 'hypochondriac' by her doctor
« POV: Takes a test of blood sugar on the medical study and thinks it will be fun and cozy – until you realize that your results are actually really strange and can indicate something serious, » she wrote as text over her video.
Kamilla told the media Newsweek that she had been looking forward to the blood sugar course after she had long suspected that something was wrong but had been rejected by her own doctor.
« I often feel uncomfortable after eating – especially if it's food with many carbohydrates, » she told the medium.
« But when I was with my doctor for the first time, they only took a fasting glucose test, and when it was normal, they almost just rejected my worries and looked at me as if I was just a hypochondriac. »
Kamilla chose to share a video from the test on social media. The experiment was just about taking a blood test before and after drinking a so -called glucose drink.
« As expected, my blood sugar level was usually at fasting. It was 5.4 mmol/l = 97.30 mg/dl, » Kamilla said.
« Then we took a glucose drink to see how our insulin responded to having 'eaten'. The next measurement was taken 30 minutes later and it was 7.0 mmol/l = 126.13 mg/dl, which is a fairly normal result. »
« But by the next measurement, my blood sugar had dropped to 4.0 mmol/l = 72.07 mg/dl. This was quite abnormal as it was significantly lower than my regular blood sugar and fell so quickly after the meal. »
« My teacher said at this point that although the result was very low, it was not necessarily something to be worried about unless it continued to fall. For most people, blood sugar will rise again at the next test. »
« But for me, my blood sugar at the next measurement after two hours had dropped further to 3.8 mmol/l = 68.47 mg/dl. At this point I felt even more dizzy, unclear in the head and had almost cold sweat. »
« My teacher looked at me worriedly and said that first and foremost I had to get something to eat and then go to my doctor to get it examined, » Kamilla also explained to Newsweek.
The 23-year-old medical student was subsequently diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia, which is a condition where blood sugar drops to an abnormally low level within four hours of a meal.
« It's a bit of fun that I discovered this through the medical study and that I finally got an answer to a question I've had so long, » she said.
« The problem with this condition is that there is no medicine or cure. It is something you have to deal with through your diet and your eating habits. »
« I have learned that I need to focus more on meals with high protein and fat content, avoid refined sugar that gives a rapid rise in blood sugar, and try to eat something every two to third hour (small, frequent meals) to stabilize my blood sugar. »
The video has received over 173,000 likes and 655 comments, many of which come from other medical students who shared their own experiences.
« We looked at our blood in the microscope at the university and three people were sent to the doctor, » wrote one user, while another wrote, « One student found out he had blood cancer. »
« I experienced the same thing during a blood sugar course. My blood sugar was high, but we forgot that I had been drinking a Starbucks iced latte all the time, » wrote a third.
