Justice prohibits Trump from removing funds from « sanctuaries » cities for migrants – Liberation

An American judge prohibited Trump administration on Thursday, April 24 from deleting, or conditioning federal funds to cities or communities known as « Sanctuaries » which take protective measures for migrants. This policy is, according to justice, contrary to the American Constitution.

This is a new setback in court for the President of the United States, who had promised during his campaign to expel millions of immigrants in an irregular situation. To put pressure, Donald Trump had notably signed decrees ordering the Ministries of Justice and Internal Security, as well as other federal agencies, to remove the funds allocated to cities or communities that claim the status of « Sanctuaries ».

This unofficial status corresponds to policies implemented by certain local authorities and which in fact aims to limit information on the immigrants they share with the federal authorities. In some cases, local policies are banned, with these local guidelines, to arrest a migrant in an irregular situation alone on the basis of its migratory status.

Several cities, including progressive bastions of the west coast such as San Francisco, Portland, Oakland, San Diego, or Seattle, carried the case before a Federal Court. A Californian federal judge thus gave them success Thursday by prohibiting, in a prescription, of « Take measures directly or indirectly to retain, freeze or condition the federal funds of cities and counties » concerned. This decision is a preliminary injunction, until the file is examined on the merits.

Stephen Miller, one of the president’s closest advisers, deplored on X that « The Judicial Coup continues »resuming there a regular line of attack on the Donald Trump camp against the judges who get into his policy.
