Judgment against Depardieu is pending – imprisonment or acquittal?

The trial against Gérard Depardieu because of sexual harassment is about to be completed: a decision is expected from Tuesday morning (10 a.m.). How will the Parisian Criminal Court decide? Is Depardieu spoken guilty? In the sensational process, the public prosecutor has called for a prison sentence of 18 months – combined with a probation requirement.

Abuses on the film set

Depardieu accused two women – an outfitter and a director’s assistant – to have addressed and inappropriately touched them when filming the film « The Green Hades » (Les Volets Verts) in 2021. Both described in court that the actor groped them on breasts and buttocks. The public prosecutor classifies the attacks as deliberate.

The actor denies having sexually harassed the two women. In the case of the outfitter, he admitted that he had touched her hips – however, emphasized that this was not sexually motivated.

Depardieu is supposed to go to the sex offender register

After the four voltage -charged trial days at the end of March, the public prosecutor had asked for a prison sentence of 18 months on probation. The requested probation period is three years and is linked to several editions.

The 76-year-old should undergo psychological care and be entered in the French register for sex offenders. In addition, the court requested a fine of 20,000 euros and compensation payments. Depardieu should not be allowed to compete in elections for two years.

If the requirements are met, he is spared a prison sentence. In the trial, he had threatened up to five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros.

Defense demands acquittal

His lawyer Jérémie Assouus called for the attitude of the proceedings for alleged procedural defects early on, spoke of « invented allegations » and accused the public prosecutor of systematically ignoring relieving witnesses.

In an over three -hour plea, he attacked the credibility of the applicants head -on and put their financial interests in the foreground. At the same time, he presented numerous relief witnesses from Depardieu’s environment. « I want this nightmare to end, » said the lawyer. « I want the hell to be thrown into Gérard Depardieu. »

« I am human, but often awkward »

Depardieu described himself in court « humanly, but often awkward ». His great art is part of his personality, but she does not mean that he is attacking women. Despite the massive allegations against him, Depardieu was unreasonable in terms of his choice of words. « There is a difference between dumbity and vulgarity, » he emphasized.

He considered that his statements were perceived as sexist or inappropriate. « Each era has its own vulgarity, its own language, its own slang. » Nevertheless, he admitted that he sometimes shoots over the goal: « I say mess. » But for him they are never more than that – words that provoke but shouldn’t hurt.

Further procedures not excluded

For years, accusations of sexual attacks have been piling up against the French film icon Depardieu. Some of them were also brought up anonymously and not everyone landed in the judiciary. For the first time, the actor now had to go to court.

Another process threatens Depardieu about suspicion of rape after the complaint by actress Charlotte Arnoild. Depardieu denies all allegations.
