John Heitinga will be new head coach Ajax, Marcel Keizer Assistant

Ajax appoints John Heitinga as the new head coach. Various media report this, including De TelegraafFriday based on sources within the Amsterdam football club. Heitinga would form a ‘trainers duo’ with Marcel Keizer. The two go according to De Telegraaf sign a contract until the summer of 2027.

The position of trainer at Ajax was vacant after it Departure of Francesco Farioli Earlier this month. The Italian managed to bring the club back to the top of Dutch football after a ramps season, with a second place in the Eredivisie as the end result. But due to a difference of insight between Farioli and the management of Ajax, the collaboration unexpectedly ended early.

Heitinga and Keizer were both the head coach of Ajax. Heitinga was an interim trainer for several months in 2023, as a successor to the dismissed Alfred Schreuder. In the past two seasons, Heitinga held the function of assistant trainer at the English clubs West Ham and Liverpool. As a player, he came out for eight seasons for the Amsterdammers.

In the summer of 2017, Keizer signed as head coach at Ajax, a few weeks before the cardiac arrest of Ajax player Abdelhak Nouri during a training camp in Austria. In the troubled months that followed, Keizer was unable to convince. He was fired a few days before the winter break. After his resignation at Ajax, Keizer was head coach in the competitions of the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Saudi Arabia.
